The Profoto B10X Plus: studio power, off the wall

For years, 'studio power' and 'grab-and-go' were a trade-off: you got the big pack-and-head light or you got the speedlight, never both. The Profoto B10X Plus is the light that closed that gap. What the B10X Plus is

The B10X Plus is a battery-powered, off-camera monolight in Profoto's compact B10 line — the brighter sibling of the standard B10. The numbers that matter on set:

Two things make it special. First, it's a flash and a continuous light in one — the built-in LED modeling lamp is bright and adjustable enough to use as a video source or to light a behind-the-scenes clip. Second, it speaks Profoto's Air system, so it drops straight into the same TTL/HSS workflow as the rest of the B-series and Pro packs you might add for a bigger build.

It goes where the sun is

High-speed sync lets you shoot wide open at 1/8000s, so you can drop the sky two stops, keep f/1.8 bokeh, and still pop clean light on your subject at noon. For outdoor portraits and on-location brand work, that combination — battery power plus HSS — is the whole reason to own (or rent) one.

TTL gets you the first frame fast

Switch on TTL and the B10X Plus meters the scene and sets a workable exposure on the first shot. Lock it in, flip to manual to keep it consistent, and you've gone from setup to shooting in seconds. On a run-and-gun day with talent waiting, that speed is worth real money.

It scales from one light to a full build

One B10X Plus and a softbox is a complete portrait kit. Our kit ships as two heads with four batteries, a charger, and your choice of Air Remote — so you can run a key-and-rim setup, or a key-fill-background three-light build, all from one trigger. Need more punch for a big group or a bright cyc? Add a pack-and-head system on the same Air channel.

Shaping the light

A bare strobe is a starting point, not a look. The B10X Plus takes Profoto's OCF modifiers, and via adapters reaches the whole modifier wall:

• OCF softbox or octa — soft, wrapping light for flattering portraits and beauty.
• Beauty dish — crisp, punchy light with a fast falloff for fashion and editorial.
• Grid — controls spill so you light the subject and not the background.
• Gels — color the background or warm the key to taste.

When to rent it

The B10X Plus is a genuinely buy-worthy light — but renting still wins when:

• You need a matched pair (or three) for a multi-light build without owning a shelf of strobes.
• The shoot is occasional — a few portrait or product days a year doesn't justify the purchase.
